Climate Change Adaptation Partners

uplbInterdisciplinary Program on Climate Change

In response to the emerging environmental problems related to climate change, University of the Philippine Los Banos (UPLB) has initiated the UPLB Interdisciplinary Program on Climate Change in 2007.

The program aims to:

  • determine the highly vulnerable and risk prone areas and communities to climate change and variabilities, and related hazards in priority production areas;
  • formulate cost effective response strategies to address these vulnerabilities and risks;
  • develop protocols for assessment of vulnerabilities and risk due to climate related hazards; and
  • strengthen institutional capacities for planning towards food security

Program Components

  1. Assessment of the effects and impacts of climate change on different sectors and systems including agriculture, natural resources, biodiversity, aquatic ecosystem, and health;
  2. Integrated assessment and quantification of vulnerability and risks due to natural and anthropogenic drivers of global environmental change;
  3. Disaster and risk management strategies; and
  4. Capacity development through information, education, and communication (IEC) and training programs for managing risks

Activities and Expected Outputs

  1. Development of concept note and program proposal by a multi-disciplinary team under the coordination of the UPLB School of Environmental Science and Management (SESAM)
  2. Survey of research and development activities related to climate change (past and present) of UPLB units
  3. Seminar and planning workshop on assessment of vulnerability risks due to global environmental change
  4. Implementation of planned priority research projects, such as: identification and development of indicators of vulnerability and measurement of risks; establishment of an environmental database and information system; identification of vulnerable and risk-prone areas to drivers of environmental change and the associated hazards, calamities, and disasters; and, development of response systems and adaptation strategies for managing risks
  5. Implementation of information, education, and communication (IEC) program, and awareness campaign, policy advocacy
  6. Project development and fund generation

The UPLB Climate Change Program is a university-wide program coordinated by the School of Environmental Science and Management (SESAM).
